I'm back! What Mother Nature has been up to in my neck of the woods is depositing a wonderful grandson on my doorstep :) This is Donovan!

I have been re-adjusting, but I think I have time to blog again, and I have missed it and all of you!

I take Donovan on long stroller rides every day - weather permitting. And, one of the things that we stumbled across was these big, shaggy acorns! I had never seen anything like them. They were only under a certain tree, so we grabbed one or two every time we went by... We put them in a bowl for a fall display, and googled them. They turned out to be acorns from the Burr Oak!
This photo was taken from my balcony looking across my driveway at the neighbors yard. It is, of course, July. So, what is wrong with this picture?

Are you thinking that the fall leaves look a bit out of place? I thought so too...so, of course, I investigated.

Turns out that all of the yellow and brown leaves had come from the neighbors tulip tree. I googled tulip tree and "yellow leaves" and several sources told me that the leaves of tulip trees will turn yellow and fall under drought conditions.

Mystery solved! It's the drought. Luckily, we had a big storm yesterday morning...here's hoping that cheered the poor tulip tree up a bit!

To tell you the truth, I have mostly hidden out inside this week because it is HOT! I did take a walk yesterday, and discovered a little wetland in an empty lot on a corner a few blocks away.

There were cattails there! I have always loved cattails!
I had seen the larger, mature version of these in dried arrangements. And, I have heard these called Japanese Lantern Trees. But, when I google that, a lot of different types of tree appear, including this one. So, if you know any more about this type of tree, please let me know!
I saw this patch of purple coneflowers, or echinacea, next to my brother's office one day. I ran over and snapped these photos with my IPhone. The bees were so intent, that they let me hold the phone just a few inches away from them to get these shots!

I have always been interested in echinacea because, as many of you probably know, it is reported to have medicinal benefits.

It is June, of course, and I am in the Northern Hemisphere. But, I saw a few of these yellow leaves here and there. I tried to ID them, but can't. They have strange squiggly markings on them in black and green.

The next unusual thing that I saw, I WAS able to identify. It is an exotic looking tree with an exotic sounding name - the Mimosa!
The second butterfly in the second row is the Eastern Comma.
The big one at the bottom is the Tawny Emperor.

I had so much fun identifying these with a site that I found. You check off boxes that match the characteristics of the butterfly and - Presto! - they tell you what it is!
To help you out, here is some information from the castle's website:

Chateau Laroche was built as an expression and reminder of the simple strength and rugged grandeur of the mighty men who lived when Knighthood was in flower.
It was their knightly zeal for honor, valor and manly purity that lifted mankind out of the moral midnight of the dark ages and started it towards the gray dawn of human hope.
Present human decadence proves a need for similar action.
Already the ancient organization of Knights have been re-activated to save society.
Any man of high ideas who wishes to help save civilization is invited to become a member of the Knights of the Golden Trail, whose only vows are the Ten Commandments.

Did you guess that the castle was in Loveland, Ohio on the banks of the Little Miami River? Of course you did! Because nothing says 'Ohio' like a castle!

Here is what Wiki says regarding the castle's origins: Château Laroche, also known as the Loveland Castle, is a museum on the banks of the Little Miami River in Loveland, Ohio, United States. A folly of a historical European castle, construction began in 1929 by Boy Scout troop leader Harry Andrews. He built the castle on two free plots of land that his scouts obtained by paying for one-year subscriptions to The Cincinnati Enquirer.[1] When Andrews died in 1981 he willed the castle to his Boy Scout troop the Knights of the Golden Trail (KOGT).[2][3] The Castle has been extensively upgraded and renovated in the years since Andrews death and has been mostly completed by the KOGT. The East tower now houses a short video presentation on Andrews' quest to finish his dream. The walls of the upstairs chapel feature many stones brought back by Andrews in his world travels and others sent to him from foreign locations by his friends and followers. Recently completed are an expansion to the outside gardens and a greenhouse.
Tales of the castle being haunted – often coming from Chateau Laroche's own volunteer knights – have been reported over the years.
Lest you think it is all disaster over there, this week I bring you a mosaic - my first(!) - I made of things I found around the yard and a bouquet I made.
The robin's egg had a hole on the other side and some yolk. I think that a chick had just never developed and the mother got rid of the egg. My dad found it while mowing.

This week's subject for Nature Notes presented itself rather rudely and unexpectedly. We had a couple of windy - but, not THAT windy - days. And, a huge limb on my dad's Bradford Pear tree just broke away.

It does not look that huge from this angle. But, it was very bushy at the top and it came all the way to the fence and engulfed it! The aforementioned bushiness is part of the reason that we think it broke. The leaves and limbs are so dense that the wind cannot pass through very well and so the limbs catch the wind, so to speak, and get blown down. The Bradford Pear has beautiful blossoms in the spring, but is known for dropping limbs.

Well, there was nothing to do, but clean it up. This is my dad! He is in his 70's, but really active, with a full-time job and giant yard!

I found some interesting things around the neighborhood this week. First of all, when I walked down the hill into the little village of Loveland, Ohio, I passed a tree that I always pass, but I stopped and looked at it because it seems to be bearing...blueberries! Take a look!

The thing that seems strange is the tree, itself. We had blueberries when I was a kid and they were on low bushes - not trees. I looked on the internet and there ARE pictures of blueberries on trees with leaves like these...

The next item on my hit parade is shown below. Sorry the photo is a tad out of focus, but I spotted it up high, behind branches, AND in someone else's yard(!) So, this photo was the best I can do. It is a cocoon made of pine needles! I googled around and it is the cocoon of the bag worm. They use the material of whatever plant they are on to make a cocoon. I discovered this on the website whatsthatbug.com.

Even though we are supposed to show you things in OUR area, I cannot resist showing you an Israeli bag worm cocoon photo from whatsthatbug.com. As I said, the bag worm makes a cocoon from whatever is handy, so the bag worm cocoon in the photo from Israel is made of sticks! The first photo below is my pine needle cocoon, and the second is the Israeli one of the same insect.

I was shocked! Who could be anti-Bambi!?!?

Well, what the article says is that we are doing such a good job "conserving" the deer - going so far as to clear meadows for them in the forest and plant food that they like - that their numbers have increased to the point where they are ruining the forest as a habitat for some kinds of birds!

The article also says that this conservation was done in large part so that there would be a lot of deer for hunters, and there are fewer hunters in the newer generation. It points out that we have also eliminated the deer's natural predators.

I guess all this makes sense to me, because nature is all about balance and equilibrium. I went out to find deer tracks for this post. I found these within about ten minutes...

I came across an old stone fence in the woods along the Loveland Trail (Loveland, OH) that nature is taking back by brute force.

If a fence is made of stone is it more of a wall than a fence? It is not part of a building or anything. So, it wouldn't be THAT kind of wall. I hope it counts, cause I want to show it to you guys, because I think it is amazing. Take a look:
I discovered a mulberry tree growing in the front yard! The birds discovered it too! It got me thinking about the concept of edible landscapes. The edible landscapes movement basically says, 'Why plant strictly ornamental plants when you can put in plants that look great and are edible too!"
